Dependability

You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.

This saying illustrates the importance of following through on your commitments. It not only displays integrity and trustworthiness, it also will lead to bigger and better opportunities.

A perfect example occurs on the basketball court. Time spent in practice is far more valuable than you might believe. Not only is it an excellent time to develop your skills, it also provides the opportunity to demonstrate dependability. If you give 100% on the practice court, when there are no fans and no cheerleaders and no scoreboard, it demonstrates a commitment to the “small” (but vitally important) thing of practice. This discipline will likely instill confidence in your coach for a “larger” thing – playing time!

Your job is another place where you can prove yourself dependable. Let’s say you get a job at a newspaper. You might start out doing something that seems insignificant, like fact-checking all the stories before they go to print. It’s not necessarily very exciting. But if you demonstrate a commitment to excellence in that small task, your boss will begin to take notice. Perhaps soon you will be helping edit major stories, or maybe even writing your own features.

Don’t forget: faithfulness in the small things leads to more significant opportunities. It opens up opportunities because people know you can be trusted. It shows reliability, and a commitment to follow through.

Dependability doesn’t mean you will achieve perfection. I promise you that you will make mistakes – we all do! Dependability means you will get up and keep going. You will learn from your mistakes and strive to accomplish what you set out to do.

If you want to be successful, you must be dependable!
